Event Details

Imagine what you are writing about. See it and live it. Do not think it up laboriously, as if you were working out mental arithmetic. Just look at it, touch it, smell it, listen to it, turn yourself into it. When you do this, the words look after themselves, like magic. ― Ted Hughes, Poetry in the Making: An Anthology

This course will explore the intersection between poetry, drawing and the imagination. It aims to provide a jumping off point from observation into the more enigmatic and ‘irrational’ imaginative realms. Both drawing and poetry employ various structures and strategies to contain and open up their subjects; we will work with formal and intuitive approaches to poetic and compositional form. Combining word and image propels us into associative areas of sound, cadence, rhythm, metaphor, narrative voice and dramatic performance. Many of the shared aspects of these crafts are both abstract and drawn from first-hand personal experience. The best poetry unlocks our imagination with an indefinable quality, hard to pin down, but deeply felt. During this five-day course, you will be taken through different drawing exercises that enable you to create a series of images unique to you, bringing a renewed confidence to engage the everyday through your own symbolic and mythic vision. All levels welcome including beginners.
